A QR Code That Opens Their Memorial

Put a small code on a headstone, plaque or urn. Anyone standing there with a phone can read their story and look through their photos.

How a Memorial QR Code Works

  1. Create the memorial

Start with a name, dates and a photo. The obituary, timeline and gallery can be filled in over the following days or weeks.

  2. Download the code

The QR code exists as soon as the memorial does. Download it as an image from the Memorial Hub.

  3. Print or engrave it

Send the image to your monument company, engraver or printer. A visitor points a phone camera at it and the memorial opens.

Try It With Your Phone

This code opens our example memorial. Point your phone camera at it and you'll see what a visitor at the graveside would see: the obituary, a timeline of a life, a photo gallery and messages from family.

Your memorial's code works the same way, and it is included in the price.

Where Families Put the Code

The code is an image file, so it can go on anything that can be printed or engraved.

  • Headstone or grave marker

A small plaque carrying the code can be fixed to the stone or set beside it. Ask the cemetery first, because some have rules about what can be attached.

  • Urn or niche

On an urn, a niche plate or a keepsake box, the code connects a small space to the whole of their life story.

  • Funeral program or prayer card

Printed on the program (order of service), it lets guests open the memorial at the service and leave a tribute when they get home. The Memorial Hub also has a QR sheet you can print and display on the day.

  • Bench, tree or garden

Beside a memorial bench or a planted tree, it tells anyone who stops there who is being remembered.

You Choose What a Scan Shows

A code on a headstone can be scanned by anyone walking past. For that reason every memorial has two codes. The private code opens the whole memorial. The public code leaves out any section you have restricted.

In the privacy settings you can restrict the obituary, the gallery and timeline, the tributes, or the option to post a tribute. One approach is to engrave the public code and send the private one to relatives.

Engrave It Once

The code never has to be replaced when the memorial changes. Add photos next year, correct a date or write more of the story, and the code already on the stone opens the updated page.

Regular visitors with an iPhone or iPad can keep the memorial in the free app after their first scan.

Questions About QR Code Memorials

Does a visitor need an app to scan the code?

No. The camera on an iPhone or Android phone reads it and opens the memorial in the web browser. There is also a free app for iPhone and iPad that keeps scanned memorials saved.

About the app
Will the code still work in years to come?

The code leads to the memorial's address, and one payment keeps the memorial online for life. Editing the memorial does not change its code, so there is nothing to re-engrave.

How big should the code be?

For printing we recommend at least 20 mm square (about 0.8 in) at 300 DPI. For engraving on stone or metal, ask the engraver what size they need for a clean result.

Do you make the plaque?

No. We provide the memorial and its QR code as an image file. A monument company, engraver or print shop puts the code on the plaque, marker or card you choose.

Can a stranger who scans it see everything?

Only if you allow it. Each memorial has a private code and a public code, and you can limit sections such as the gallery or the tributes to people who scan the private one.

Can a code be added to a headstone that is already in place?

Often, yes, as a small plaque fitted to the stone or next to it. Cemeteries set their own rules, so check with the cemetery office or your monument company before ordering.
